From Cards to Signatures

Our business logos are our identifiers and should be visible on any written communication, be it on a business card, a letterhead, or an e-mail signature. A layout based on our design basics helps us to create an overall look and feel.

Exception to the rule

There’s an exception for correspondence and business cards. Each entity may use its regular, domestic stationery, carrying its logo, for its worldwide correspondence. There’s no need for different letterheads or separate stationery.

The same exception applies to the use of business cards worldwide. However, employees in the U.S. and Canada with a global role for their business may request two sets of business cards – one for the use in the U.S. and Canada and one for use in the rest of the world. E-MAIL SIGNATURES

Basic Principles

  • Please use the Verdana font type for your e-mail texts and signatures.
  • You can’t create the company logo by typing them in our font – please use the logo files instead.
  • For colleagues located outside the U.S. and Canada, other rules apply.

Using our logos in your signature

Our business logos are written with distinctive lettering. Since external recipients of your e-mail do not have our M-font embedded in their systems, the logo written in the M-font is not visible to them. Therefore, please always use the logo files below.

In your signature, you can use a rich or vibrant color. None of our colors take priority or have any specific meaning. In fact, it’s important that all the colors are used evenly across our identity to create variety.

Don'ts

Using social media icons

You are allowed to use social media icons in your e-mail signature. We cannot provide you with any icons, since social media platforms change their icons and guidelines regularly. For that reason we do recommend the use of the text version layout (social media channels written as text).

Our general rules are:

  • When using social media icons which link to social media channels, please only link to official EMD Group or business sector channels. Do not link to private channels.
  • Don‘t design any social media icons. Only the official icons can be used.

Using banners in your signature

You may use banners in your signature to promote external events, e.g. trade shows for a limited period of time. Any other banners for external communication and especially for internal communication are not allowed.

Use of additional elements

In principle, the use of other logos or elements should be avoided. However, there are events that make it imperative for our employees to draw attention to these in their e-mail signature. For example, a "Diversity Week" or a special award given to the company. It must be an event that is brought to us from an external source. The use of these additional elements is limited in time.

Please note that only one other element may be used in addition to the respective business logos. Our standard logo clear space applies here as well. Please bear in mind that any e-mail attachment could lead to your mail ending up in a spam folder. Therefore you should handle attachments in your mail very consciously and in a very limited way.

Using Company Brand Assets

Any use of Company Brand Assets is subject to our Brand Hub Terms and Conditions.

Please be aware that Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany (“Company”) is not allowed to use the trademark “Merck” in the U.S. and Canada. Furthermore, Company’s name may only be used in the following format “Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany” and in simple, non-stylized font and never close to any logo in the U.S. and Canada. 

If Company Brand Assets downloaded from the Brand Hub are to be used in or targeting the U.S./ Canada please make sure to comply with these requirements. As a registered Brand Hub user please visit the Brand Hub Logo Section for more detailed information.

If you legitimately share Company Brand Assets with other users, you must make sure that the sharing recipient is aware of these restrictions, our Brand Hub Terms and Conditions as well as any applicable Design Basics and Appendix Guidelines. 

As the sharing recipient you must ensure with the person sharing the Company Brand Asset with you that you are complying with aforementioned restrictions as well as with any applicable Design Basics and Appendix Guidelines. You are furthermore bound by our Brand Hub Terms and Conditions.
